According to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, in the state of Texas over 65,000 cars and trucks are stolen and almost 200,000 are burglarized each year. Many jurisdictions report that keys left inside and doors unlocked are major factors in stolen and burglarized vehicles. We would like to remind everyone of some parking lot safety tips that can help protect employees and their vehicles during the upcoming holiday season.
Be aware of your surroundings:
- Park in designated employee parking lots, these areas have increased parking lot patrols as well as concentrated security measures
- Walk with a sense of purpose and without distractions such as texting
- When walking to your vehicle, have your keys in your hand
- If possible, walk with a coworker
- Check around your vehicle and in the back seat before getting into your vehicle
- Once in you’re vehicle, lock your doors
Secure your vehicle:
- Once parked, role all windows up and lock all doors
- Place all valuables in your trunk and make sure your trunk is secure
- Do not keep your home address programmed into your vehicle’s GPS device
- Never leave your vehicle running while unattended
