Honoring the Legacy of Nelson Mandela
In 2009, the United Nations designated July 18, South African civil rights leader Nelson Mandela’s birthday, as Nelson Mandela International Day in recognition of his dedication to the service of humanity, race relations, gender equality, protection of human rights and promotion of a culture of peace throughout the world. The day is intended to inspire us all to change the world for the better by making a difference in our community. Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa’s first Black president in May 1994. The Nobel Peace Prize recipient died in 2013 at age 95.
