Olympic Star Champions Health Equity
U.S. track and field star Gabby Thomas’ three gold medals—in the 200-meter, 4×100 and 4×200-meter relay events—made her one of the stars of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
But away from the track, the Atlanta native and former Harvard University runner who lives in Austin, is focused on helping to improve health equity for underrepresented populations.
While earning her degree in neurobiology at Harvard, she studied disparities in the U.S. health care system, leading her to pursue a master’s in public health and epidemiology at the University of Texas at Austin. She also continues to volunteer at a public health clinic in Austin and frequently uses her platform as a world class athlete to discuss how barriers to health care often impact people of color.
Thomas has said she intends to pursue a career in hospital leadership or with a health equity-focused non-profit after she retires from pro track and field.
