Firearms Detection System Coming to ED

What’s happening?

As Houston Methodist continues to remain a leading health care provider to our patients, physicians, and community, it has become increasingly important for us to provide additional security measures in our Emergency Departments. For that reason, Houston Methodist Public Safety will be deploying non-invasive firearms screening technology at all Emergency Departments.

Why are we doing this?

Houston Methodist places the patient at the center of importance in all that we do. We are raising the bar by deploying this technology. Evidence suggests that Emergency Departments (ED) often care for patients with a history of crime and mental health diagnoses, creating an environment where the threat of violence and weapons is increasingly prevalent.

What is Evolv technology?

This weapon screening is a non-invasive, intelligent screening solution that provides a targeted and accurate detection of weapons. It uses a combination of advanced sensors, algorithms, and AI based learning software to detect potential weapons passing through the station. Designed to look for weapons, staff members can be assured of a safer working environment to provide better care and patient outcomes with proven engagement scores through a respectful screening process that empowers security professionals and enhances the visitor experience.

Where and when will this technology be deployed?

The firearms detection system will be deployed at all Houston Methodist hospital Emergency Department main entry doors. We will begin deployment tentatively in May 2024, with HM Willowbrook deploying on April 15, 2024. Houston Methodist Medical Center currently has this system deployed since May 2023.

What happens if a what is found on an individual and what if someone refuses?

Typically, an individual knowingly or unknowingly carrying a firearm will turn back to secure their firearms outside of the facility. Individuals that trigger the alarm will be asked to step aside for a secondary search until they are cleared. Under Texas Penal Code 30.06 /30.07, it is a Class C misdemeanor to carry a firearm in a healthcare facility. If a firearm is found, that individual will be asked to exit the facility and secure it. If they are noncooperative, we will ask our on-site Police Officers to assist with enforcing the law and charges may be filed.

What is next?

Upon initial system wide deployment and further evaluation, Public Safety will potentially expand the firearms detection system to the Emergency Care Centers and to Comprehensive Care Centers.
