June 17, 2019: Are you curious about how your team members are applying a benefit mindset in their everyday lives? Let me share an example with you!
The Medical and Surgical ICUs chose to address throughput from a benefit mindset perspective. Charge nurse Maria Gordon, MSN, RN, CCRN, shares how.
“Throughput is a major focus at HMSL. As a charge nurse, I’m tasked with adhering to rules, supporting management, and doing the right thing, even with throughput. The benefit mindset helps me approach and think of throughput in a positive way and not just as a number,” she said.
“Transferring patients out of the ICU in a timely manner and even more importantly, getting patients into the ICU has helped us achieve better efficiency and ensure critical care patients are taken care of right away in the proper environment with well-trained ICU staff. We view our two ICUs as one team. We share the workload, especially with admissions and this has shown an improvement in how fast we can admit a patient once they are assigned to the ICU. The benefit mindset attributes we incorporate are being an everyday leader, meaningfully contributing to throughput, serving with purpose, passion, putting others first, and paying it forward.”
I hope the ICU team inspires your team to incorporate a benefit mindset into an area of opportunity you need to improve.
