August 19, 2019 – We are reviewing the four Magnet domains during August. Transformational Leadership is about inspiring others to develop their own leadership capacity. Structural Empowerment speaks to shared decision making and having a voice in your practice.
This week let’s look at how Exemplary Professional Practice impacts professional development, communication, collaboration and coordination of patient care so patients and families receive the highest-quality care.
HMSL provides patient and family-centered care by honoring the value and integrity of a patient’s family and other significant relationships. Patients and families tell us they want to be treated with dignity and respect, receive information in an unbiased, timely manner, participate in their care at the level they choose, and collaborate with care providers.
A great example of Patient and Family-Centered Care is how the Childbirth Center (CBC) changed their model of care. Previously, mothers were cared for by a postpartum nurse and the babies cared for by a nursery nurse. This often led to miscommunication and delays in discharge education.
In 2018, the CBC moved to couplet care, where one nurse cares for the mother and newborn and mothers and newborns remain together for the entire hospital stay. This model of care facilitates bonding, encourages breastfeeding, and supports parent confidence in caring for their newborn.
