August 5, 2019 – We are right in the middle of our four-year Magnet designation and recently submitted our interim monitoring report. As a refresher, let’s review the four Magnet domains, Transformational Leadership, Structural Empowerment, Exemplary Professional Practice, and New Knowledge, Innovations and Improvements along w/ some examples of how these are lived out at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.
Transformational Leadership (TL) speaks to the influence the Chief Nursing Officer has within the organization to effectively lead change. Transformational leaders stimulate and inspire followers to both achieve extraordinary outcomes and develop their own leadership capacity. Transformational leadership core components are idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration. An example of my leadership that led to an organizational change is the development of HMSL Palliative Care Services. Palliative Care is a strategic organizational change that helps meet the needs of patients and families who are experiencing life altering illnesses, need their symptoms managed, and help to improve the quality of their life. Dr. Wurdeman and her team work interprofessionally to meet these needs and provide expert management of complex physical and emotional symptoms.
