August 12, 2019 – This month we are reviewing the four Magnet Domains. Last week we looked at an example of transformational leadership. This week let’s talk about structural empowerment. At the heart of structural empowerment is shared governance.
Shared governance means the people who do the work know best how to solve the problems. It is a shared decision-making model between staff, leaders, patients, families and the community.
Shared governance goals are aligned with our mission, vision, and values to help us reach the hospital’s strategic goals. There is a focus on how we provide safe, efficient and effective patient care as an interprofessional team.
An example is Michelle Moreno Lee, MSN, RN, Main 5 East RN II and her participation in the Wound Treatment Associate (WTA) Program to increase her knowledge about wound care.
Before Michelle joined the WTA program, Main 5 East had an increase in hospital-acquired pressure injuries. Michelle graduated from the WTA program in October 2018 and with the support of her manager began to work with the Main 5 East nurses and PCAs to increase their knowledge and skill in preventing pressure injuries and caring for patient wounds.
Since January 2019, Main 5 East has zero hospital-acquired pressure injuries. Michelle is now the co-chair of the No Harm Wound Care Council and partners with mentors Julie Kaiser, BSN, RN, RN-BC, Amber Jones, MSN, RN, CWON, Charline Manzano, BSN, RN, CCRN, and co-chair Honey Ignatius, BSN, RN, CVRN to continue to improve patient care and safety.
