Mariana Smith and Clifford Thompson have been announced as chair and co-chair, respectively, of the Young Professionals ERG.
They share in feeling the need for an organization that could increase awareness of the resources available at Houston Methodist for people in the early stages of their career journey that could help make professional connections and to take ownership of their career.

“We didn’t want age to be what defined a young professional. We wanted it to be something that’s all inclusive. Maybe they are individuals that decided to go back to school or were a nurse and are now in administration,” said Smith, a patient experience specialist at Houston Methodist The Woodlands.
The group defines young professionals as “talented and enthusiastic individuals in the early stages of their career (within two years of beginning their role/title).”
The group is planning several membership events this year.
“We focused on events that connect members, provide resources, have an impact in the community and help to make us better employees,” said Thompson, a project manager in corporate strategy development.

The ERG is working to finalize dates for three events:
•Do’s, Don’ts and Donuts, an in-person and virtual discussion on professional communication techniques
•How to Stay Motivated and Manage Stress, an in-person and virtual workshop focused on maintaining a healthy work-life balance
•Community Outreach Day, in which members will devote time to helping an area non-profit organization
In addition to Smith and Thompson, the ERG’s officers include: Lindsay Phend (secretary), Whitney Nance (membership coordinator), Melanie Adams (treasurer) and Guneet Kalra (co-chair, HMSL) Lisa Schillaci is the executive sponsor.
