Everyone has experienced the instant and profound effect that music can have on our emotions. For example, in nearly every culture around the world, mothers sing to their babies to soothe them.
Numerous studies have been conducted which point to music’s profound effect on not only our emotions but also our physical well-being. Put simply, music has a fundamental effect on humans. It can reduce stress, enhance relaxation, provide distraction from pain, and improve the results of clinical therapy.
An important part of our Houston Methodist Sugar Land culture is reflected in our Vision Statement where we promise to cultivate a safe, spiritual and healing environment. Music at Methodist is one of the many ways that we contribute to creating that kind of healing space.
This year, we have partnered with Da Camera of Houston, the Center for Performing Arts Medicine at Houston Methodist and several solo artists and area schools to provide music on a regular basis at our Hospital. When appropriate, individual artists will bring music to our patient care units and to individual patient rooms upon request.
One of the gifts of music is that it can transport us back to a time of fond memories and special relationships. The gift of music is an important part of our healing environment at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.
