Your Next Steps Before the Epic v2017 Upgrade

Before the Epic version 2017 (v2017) upgrade on Feb. 11, be sure to complete the following activities so you are prepared and there is no impact to patient care.

1. Review Your Upgrade Companion in Epic

Your Upgrade Companion includes notes on upgrade changes and guided playground activities and is your sole training resource. Review it carefully – and download or print if necessary.

Upgrade Companions for all roles are available on the Learning Home and the Epic website.

To visit your Learning Home:

  • Log into Epic and select your dashboard home workspace tab (pie chart icon). Your Learning Home should display
  • If you have more than one dashboard workspace, click the dashboard icon (square with number in it) and select your Learning Home

2. Acknowledge Your Review

To verify you’ve reviewed your Upgrade Companion, select the check box and click the Acknowledge button at the bottom of the banner within the Epic Learning Home. Leadership will receive a weekly report to confirm completion of your review.

3. Practice in the Playground

Use the guided activities in your Upgrade Companion to practice in the playground. Playground user IDs/passwords for all roles are available in Accessing the Epic Playground on the Epic website.

Do Not Select Departments/Units Beginning with ZZZ

To avoid billing and reporting issues, don’t select departments in Epic that begin with ‘ZZZ.’ These departments are reserved for the following:

  • Department closures: For billing and reporting reconciliation, departments remain in Epic for six months before deletion
  • New departments: Departments built in preparation for future expansions; awaiting activation

Please be mindful of your department selection, as department names may look similar.

This Is Not The Intranet

This website contains weekly news for HMSL employees and volunteers. This is not to be confused with the Houston Methodist intranet. More in-depth information about each department can be found on the intranet site.
