In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion continues to pay tribute to generations of Hispanic Americans who have influenced and enriched our nation and society. This week we feature Dr. Miguel A. Quiñones.
Dr. Quiñones, MACC, FASE, was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Over the past 40 years, he has been a pioneer in the field of echocardiography. He has been recognized worldwide for his groundbreaking contributions in echocardiography, both as a teacher and as an investigator. At Houston Methodist, he led the development of the institution’s world-class echocardiography laboratory. In 2005, he established Houston Methodist’s new Department of Cardiology, serving as its first chair until 2016. At that time, he became the new editor-in-chief of the Methodist DeBakey Cardiovascular Journal, leading the quarterly peer-reviewed publication into its new digital era.
Dr. Quiñones has authored or co-authored more than 250 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has contributed to writing groups that provide cardiology guidelines, including chairing the writing group for the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association Document that established criteria for clinical competence in echocardiography. As an expert in imaging and measuring heart and vascular function, Dr. Quiñones is responsible for many of the guidelines used by cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons worldwide to interpret echocardiographic data. In 2012, he was honored by two of the country’s most prestigious cardiology societies: the ACC and the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE). In addition, the ACC awarded Dr. Quiñones its highest distinction of Master of the American College of Cardiology, and ASE honored him with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
