I am happy to share the great news that Michael Garcia, chief operating officer of Houston Methodist Hospital, has been chosen as the new CEO of Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, effective Feb. 5. Michael’s extensive knowledge of hospital operations and his commitment to our mission and vision make him the perfect choice for this key position.
The CEO job was open after Chris Siebenaler took an elevated role in the system, now serving as the executive vice president of network hospitals. Michael, who is a lawyer and registered nurse, is currently responsible for overall HMH hospital operations and specifically managing multiple hospital programs, including the J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center, the Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center, the Houston Methodist Neurological Institute, the Lynda K. and David M. Underwood Center for Digestive Disorders, Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, and the Dr. Mary and Ron Neal Cancer Center. Michael also was instrumental in helping HMH navigate the many operational issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Before becoming COO in 2015, Michael spent two years as a vice president of operations responsible for all HMH operating rooms. He also had oversight of 129 multispecialty ICU beds and multiple acute care surgical units, including orthopedics, transplant, and general and plastic surgery. Before coming to Houston Methodist, he was most recently a vice president at Seton Family of Hospitals in Austin. Michael also served as a litigation attorney in Chicago.
Michael’s 32 years of health care experience, combined with his exceptional commitment to Houston Methodist, ensures his success as a CEO in our system. Houston Methodist Sugar Land will benefit from Michael’s understanding of hospital operations and his ability to develop personal relationships with his employees, staff and physicians. He has the perfect mix of skill, talent and personality for this top leadership job.
Michael plans to build upon the accomplishments of Chris and HMSL with a continued focus on providing unparalleled safety and quality care along with offering an exceptional patient experience. He also wants to keep growing HMSL and soon provide more specialty clinical services for the community.
We are very fortunate that Michael knows our organization and the importance of I CARE values. I am grateful that Houston Methodist has so many talented people who we can promote to these leadership roles. Congratulations Michael.
