TLIP 3: Flexible Scheduling

Houston Methodist Sugar Land is committed to being a workplace of choice for our employees. Here at HMSL, we have four Top Level Improvement Priorities (TLIPs). TLIP 3 is dedicated to finding innovative ways to empower personal and professional growth.

The TLIP 3 committee is made up of 8 members from across our hospital. They meet bi-weekly and focus on developing creative opportunities for employees to invest in themselves and their careers – as well as seeking solutions to bring greater alignment to work-life balance.

You may remember earlier this year a survey was sent out to all employees to get your input on values important to you. One reoccurring theme was flexible scheduling. Members of the team met with the human resources department along with directors of high turnover departments to pilot hybrid and flexible work schedules. Here is some of the progress:

  • The Ultrasound Department submitted a Voice Pillar Card to promote improved work-life balance. This team-lead initiative resulted in an upgraded schedule, which now accommodates 4-10 hour shifts. This has extended outpatient scheduling time by 1700 minutes – a huge win for our patients! It’s worth noting not every shift changed their hours, as some elected not too.
  • Pharmacy is currently working on a schedule that would allow pharmacists and technicians to work every third weekend, instead of every other weekend.
  • OR has beefed up their evening, nightshift and off-shift schedule to accommodate cases.
  • Main ED has been working with System Flex Float Pool to supplement their staffing needs. They have been able to fill in their schedules and accommodate one staff member to work 10-hour shifts.
  • LaborWorkx has a mobile app that will be coming out soon. This will make self-scheduling easier for our employees.

We understand not all departments will be able to accommodate flexible scheduling. The goal of the TLIP 3 committee is to show all HMSL employees their voice matters and their suggestions are being discussed. The TLIP 3 committee is continuing its work on other survey results. More updates to come!
